Sailing Vessel Strikes Dredging Equipment
Thursday, May 30, 2019

Just after 3am, the New Castle County 911 Center received notification from the Coast Guard that a 45’ sailing vessel was in distress in the Delaware River off of New Castle. Rescue Boats 18, 20, 7, and 29 along with Delaware State Police Trooper 4 were alerted to respond. 18 Marine 1 launched from the 3rd Street boat ramp and quickly made contact with the vessel. A member from 18 Marine 1 boarded the vessel to check for injuries and damage. The crew learned that the vessel struck dredging equipment and had damaged the hull. There was no water leaking into the vessel and only one minor injury. The vessel was escorted to the Delaware City Marina by 18 Marine 1 and 29 Marine 1. An ambulance from Delaware City Fire Company met the vessels at the dock and evaluated one injured member of the vessel. The accident investigation was turned over to DNREC and the US Coast Guard.
