At approximately 0515hrs this morning, Good Will and mutual aid units from Wilmington Manor Fire Company, Minquas Fire Company #1, Christiana Fire, Minqudale Fire Company, and Delaware City Volunteer Fire Company, No. 1, Inc., Station 15 were alerted to a house fire on the unit block of West 5th Street in Old New Castle. Chief 18 arrived on scene quickly after dispatch and reported a 2 1/2 story home with smoke showing from the rear. Engine 18 arrived, securing their water supply and stretching a handline to the front door. The residents reported a fire in the basement. Engine 18's crew made a push into the basement with the assistance of the second due engine Squad 23. Crews encountered severe hoarding conditions on the inside the residence and fire conditions in the stairwell as they descended into the basement. The fire was successfully extinguished and all searches proved negative. Crews were on scene for just over four hours checking for fire extension throughout the first floor.
One firefighter was injured at the scene. They were transported to the local trauma center in non life threatening condition.
The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
